Is This the Turning Point? Canadiens’ Young Core Shows Signs of Future Greatness After Recent Surge
After a rocky start to the season, the Montreal Canadiens are starting to turn heads — not for where they are now, but for what they might become. With several impressive performances in recent weeks, the Habs’ young core is showing glimpses of a promising future that fans and analysts alike have been waiting to see.
Leading the charge is Juraj Slafkovský, who has finally begun to find his rhythm, notching 7 points in his last 5 games. Alongside him, Nick Suzuki continues to grow into his leadership role, playing with both poise and grit that belies his age. Cole Caufield, though streaky, remains a constant offensive threat and is beginning to refine his two-way play under Martin St. Louis’ guidance.
“It’s starting to click,” said Suzuki after a gritty 4-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. “We’re trusting each other more, playing faster, and not backing down. We know we’re building something here.”
While the Canadiens are still outside the playoff picture, their recent play — including wins over top-tier teams — has given fans a reason to believe. Behind the bench, head coach Martin St. Louis has remained patient and supportive, emphasizing growth and identity over short-term results.
Goaltending has also stabilized with Sam Montembeault delivering a string of solid starts. The defense, led by Kaiden Guhle and Arber Xhekaj, is playing with increasing confidence and physicality.
There’s no illusion that Montreal is suddenly a contender. But for a team in the midst of a rebuild, the recent surge is a breath of fresh air. More than the wins, it’s the style of play — fast, tough, and unrelenting — that suggests the Canadiens are finally turning a corner.
As the regular season winds down, one thing is becoming clearer: if this core stays together and keeps improving, the Canadiens might not be waiting long before they become a serious threat again.
