The San Francisco 49ers have long relied on George Kittle’s elite play at tight end, but even “The People’s Tight End” can use support. That help is arriving in the form of former Jacksonville Jaguars TE Luke Farrell, who joins the Niners on a three-year, $20.25 million deal, including $11 million guaranteed, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The signing, made during the NFL’s legal tampering period, comes at a key moment for Kittle, who turns 32 this season and has ongoing contract discussions with GM John Lynch ahead of his 2026 expiration.
Farrell, 27, wasn’t a major receiving threat in Jacksonville, never exceeding 13 catches in a season and still seeking his first career touchdown. However, his value lies in his blocking skills, an area the 49ers have long prioritized. At 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, he’s among the league’s best at pass protection, making him a perfect complement to Kittle in San Francisco’s two-tight end sets.
While Kittle remains the primary pass-catching TE, Farrell adds much-needed depth and extra protection as the Niners gear up for the 2025 season.
