Montez Sweat, a standout defensive end for the Chicago Bears, has reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with his current contract and is seeking a salary increase. Sources indicate that Sweat has communicated to the Bears’ management that, without a revised deal, he may consider leaving the team, potentially to join the New England Patriots.
Sweat joined the Bears on October 31, 2023, following a trade with the Washington Commanders. Shortly after, he secured a four-year contract extension worth $98 million, with $72.9 million guaranteed. This extension positioned him among the top five highest-paid edge rushers in the league at that time.
In the 2023 season, Sweat made an immediate impact, recording 12.5 sacks across his time with both the Commanders and the Bears. Notably, he became the first player in NFL history to lead two different teams in sacks during a single season. His performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection, underscoring his value on the defensive front.
However, the 2024 season saw a decline in Sweat’s production. He recorded 3.5 sacks, 5 tackles-for-loss, and 7 quarterback hits, missing some snaps and one game due to injuries. Despite these setbacks, Sweat remains a pivotal figure in the Bears’ defense.
The New England Patriots, with over $130 million in projected salary cap space, are actively seeking to bolster their defensive line. Reports suggest they are targeting several defensive linemen in free agency. Sweat’s potential availability could align with their objectives, making him a viable candidate for acquisition.
