Breaking news; the Blues star talks out about his new job and his passion for the club.
Marc Cucurella hopes to continue his strong end-of-season form with Spain at Euro 2024, describing his new role as “nice.”
Cucurella has struggled at Stamford Bridge since his big money move from Brighton in the summer of 2022, and he was even booed at times by Chelsea fans during his first season there.
However, the Spaniard, who concluded the season in excellent form, has already established himself as a fan favourite and has been named to Spain’s Euro 2024 squad.
Cucurella on his change in role
The 25-year-old’s fortunes changed after then-manager Mauricio Pochettino implemented a tactical change that saw Cucurella slide into midfield when the Blues had possession.
Cucurella appeared to be a completely different player in the new role, which appeared to suit his skill set, and the Spain international has called the job as “nice,” and one that he enjoys playing.
“Changing my role has been nice,” Cucurella stated on Chelsea’s website.
“I try to do anything I can to help the team, and if I play in more positions and it benefits the team, I’m delighted because it gives me more opportunities to play.
“I suppose in the beginning of the season, I also played right back, and as usual, I’ll do my best to help the team and win the game.
“Whenever I’m on the pitch, I’m happy to help out but for sure I like to play this position [inverted left-back].”
While Cucurella’s immediate goal is to help Spain win Euro 2024, the fullback is excited to get started at Chelsea under new manager Enzo Maresca.
“I feel very good, and I’m excited for the future with Chelsea,” Cucurella said.
“I feel really powerful, happy, and confident.
“Playing football is one of the best things I can do in my life, and to play for this club is just amazing!”
Cucurella will undoubtedly play an important role under Maresca, who is known for inverting the full back on one side, and Chelsea fans will be expecting to see him maintain his impressive form.
