Pat Nevin believes he knew Palmer was a top-tier player from the moment he saw him, and it only took a couple of touches for the former Blues winger to know:
“When Cole Palmer first broke through at Manchester City, he came on as a substitute, and after just three or four touches, I remarked, ‘I think I’ve seen the new Kevin De Bruyne,’ which surprised a lot of people.
The former winger boasted.
“In terms of comparisons to former Chelsea players, I believe De Bruyne comes closest. He’s not a winger, but rather a wide attacker or number ten. People bring up names like Eden Hazard and Frank Lampard, but he’s not like either of them; he’s simply Cole Palmer.”
Nevin wasn’t the only one with foresight; Paul Merson and many of us foresaw this type of careful treatment for Palmer back in the summer. It has happened, and things aren’t going to get much easier in the following games. This Sunday’s home game against Newcastle provides an excellent opportunity for him to demonstrate his abilities.

Palmer, like De Bruyne, has to shine this weekend.
Kevin De Bruyne is recognized for producing every week, even when the opposition’s team is set up to stop him. Cole Palmer will have to expect this type of treatment from now on. He’ll be heavily tagged and can’t allow it get to him. De Bruyne has an excellent mentality and a powerful engine to keep pushing. Palmer must follow in the footsteps of the Belgian if he is to maximize his skill.
