CONFIRMED: Denver Broncos GM George Paton and HC Sean Payton Announce Darren Rizzi as New Special Teams Coordinator
Denver, CO – In a move that signals a fresh start for the Denver Broncos’ special teams unit, General Manager George Paton and Head Coach Sean Payton today announced the hiring of Darren Rizzi as the team’s new special teams coordinator.
Rizzi brings a wealth of experience to the Broncos, having served as the special teams coordinator for the New Orleans Saints from 2016 to 2022. During his tenure in New Orleans, Rizzi’s units consistently ranked among the league’s best, known for their aggressive schemes and impactful play on both kickoff and punt returns.
“We are thrilled to welcome Darren to the Broncos family,” said Paton in a press release. “His track record of success speaks for itself. He brings a high level of energy and expertise that will undoubtedly elevate our special teams play.”
Payton, who previously worked with Rizzi during his time as head coach of the Saints, echoed Paton’s sentiments. “Darren is a proven winner and a tremendous coach,” Payton stated. “He has a knack for identifying and developing talent, and I’m confident he will bring that same level of excellence to our special teams unit.”
Rizzi replaces Ben Kotwica, who was recently relieved of his duties following the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season. While the Broncos’ special teams unit showed flashes of brilliance under Kotwica, a few critical miscues, such as a blocked field goal in a crucial game against the Kansas City Chiefs, ultimately led to the coaching change.
The Broncos are hoping that Rizzi’s arrival will inject new life into their special teams, providing a crucial edge in what promises to be a competitive 2025 season.
