Enzo Maresca explains why Chelsea didn’t sign any strikers this summer.

Enzo Maresca’s press conferences are fairly blunt and straightforward. He doesn’t play games or mince words.

When asked if he was disappointed that Chelsea had not been able to sign a striker despite their efforts all summer, he admitted that he and his bosses were already looking ahead to January.

“We wanted players… but we wanted players we decide [the right type of player], and then the condition has to be our condition,” Maresca told me.

The coach also admitted that it was something he and his sporting directors would discuss in the next window, stating that he “didn’t know” how many games were scheduled between now and then.

He doesn’t seem too downhearted; Nicolas Jackson is scoring, and if he can stay fit, we should be fine. The lack of depth is undeniably concerning, however.
