Bears Receive Unfortunate News in Pursuit of Chiefs Star Trey Smith
The Chicago Bears’ hopes of bolstering their offensive line with Kansas City Chiefs guard Trey Smith have taken a hit. Despite reported interest in the standout lineman, the Bears have received unfortunate news regarding their pursuit.
According to sources, the Chiefs are prioritizing retaining Smith, who has been a key piece of their offensive front since being drafted in 2021. With Kansas City looking to maintain continuity for quarterback Patrick Mahomes, they are expected to either extend Smith or place a significant contract offer on the table, making it difficult for the Bears to lure him away.
Chicago, in need of reinforcements on the offensive line to protect quarterback Justin Fields (or a potential new signal-caller), had viewed Smith as a prime target in free agency or via trade. However, with Kansas City’s strong stance and Smith’s likely preference to stay with a Super Bowl-contending team, the Bears may now have to explore alternative options.
General manager Ryan Poles, who has connections to the Chiefs from his time in Kansas City, was thought to have an inside track on negotiations. However, with Smith’s value skyrocketing and the Chiefs unwilling to part with a foundational piece, Chicago’s plans may need to shift toward other top linemen in free agency or the NFL Draft.
As the offseason unfolds, the Bears will have to reassess their approach, but for now, their pursuit of Trey Smith appears to have hit a major roadblock.
