The National Rugby League (NRL) has cemented its position as Australia’s premier sporting code, announcing a record-breaking financial year. The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) revealed an operating surplus of $62.3 million, marking the fourth consecutive year of profit and pushing the four-year total to over $226.5 million.
“This is a monumental achievement for the NRL,” said ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM. “It’s clear that the game is in a period of unprecedented growth, and we’re not just the number one sport in Australia, but in the entire Pacific region.”
Total revenue soared to a new high of $744.9 million, a $43.7 million increase from the previous year. This surge in revenue can be attributed to several factors, including record-breaking attendances, increased viewership across all platforms, and the continued success of the women’s game.
“We’ve seen more people watching, attending, and playing rugby league than ever before,” V’landys added. “This financial success allows us to reinvest in the game at all levels, from grassroots development to elite competitions, ensuring a sustainable and thriving future for the NRL.”
The ARLC’s strategic focus on financial management and diversification of assets has played a crucial role in this success. The commission has prioritized reinvesting profits back into the sport, supporting clubs and states, and increasing player payments.
The NRL’s financial dominance is further highlighted by its ambitious goal to reach the $1 billion revenue mark. With the continued growth of the game and the upcoming broadcast rights negotiations, this target seems well within reach.
This record-breaking financial year solidifies the NRL’s position as the undisputed leader in Australian sports, paving the way for further expansion and innovation in the years to come.
