The New England Patriots have made a significant move in bolstering their defense by signing linebacker Robert Spillane to a three-year, $37.5 million contract, which includes $20.6 million guaranteed.
Spillane, 29, brings a wealth of experience to the Patriots, having previously played for the Tennessee Titans, Pittsburgh Steelers, and most recently, the Las Vegas Raiders. In the 2024 season with the Raiders, he showcased his defensive prowess by leading the team with a career-high 158 tackles, along with two sacks and two interceptions.
His addition to the Patriots’ roster is part of a broader strategy to enhance the team’s defensive capabilities. Under the leadership of new head coach Mike Vrabel, New England has been proactive in free agency, securing key defensive players such as defensive tackle Milton Williams, cornerback Carlton Davis, and linebacker Harold Landry.
Spillane’s familiarity with Vrabel, stemming from their time together with the Titans, is expected to facilitate a smooth integration into the Patriots’ defensive scheme. His consistent performance and leadership qualities are anticipated to make an immediate impact, strengthening the team’s linebacker corps alongside Ja’Whaun Bentley.
This strategic signing underscores the Patriots’ commitment to reinforcing their defense as they aim to return to playoff contention in the upcoming season.
