Man City’s £50 million signing bonus maintains the PSR edge over Premier League opponents.

Manchester City are likely to make more than £50 million this summer without spending a dime, all for players who have barely made 21 games combined.

When Liam Delap leaves Manchester City for up to £20 million this summer, the City Football Academy will maintain its proud record of selling dozens of young players in recent years.

Last year, City’s academy raised more than £50 million (with an additional £13 million possible in add-ons), up from £47 million the previous year. The CFA is expected to surpass those figures with Delap’s move to either Ipswich or Southampton.

Southampton has been responsible for more than a third of the roughly £150 million in transactions, and will increase that figure if they beat Ipswich to Delap’s signing.

They bought Taylor Harwood-Bellis this summer for a pre-agreed fee of £20 million, while Tommy Doyle joined Wolves for £5 million in a similar deal. Delap’s £20 million will be added to the £5 million in a sell-on clause reserved for Douglas Luiz. City has earned more than £50 million from players who have made only 21 games combined. Luiz never played a competitive game for the Blues.

The steady flow of millions into City bank accounts from academy players may be another reason why their summer has been quiet thus far.

Other teams had to scurry to meet the June 30 deadline for filing Profit and Sustainability Rules reports. Some traded unproven young players for millions, while others had to sell players swiftly to avoid the points deductions that Nottingham Forest and Everton faced last season.

City was fortunate to avoid the circus and have continued to raise funds from academy players. When they do make a move in the transfer market, they will do so with a large war chest and the knowledge that the academy’s ability to sell Premier League-ready players is only increasing.
