Erik ten Hag has had’several’ phone discussions with one of Manchester United’s top transfer targets, according to sources, as talks over a possible move continue.

This summer, United’s top objective has been to sign a new centre defender.

Much to the chagrin of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the Premier League team was prevented from signing OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, who impressed in Ligue 1 last season.

Jarrad Branthwaite was another target, and while the Everton and England defender is said to be interested in joining the squad at Old Trafford, negotiations appear to be stalled.

After much talk about their search for a new center-back, it appears that a transfer for Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt

According to Dutch magazine De Telegraaf, United have made a five-year contract proposal for Bayern Munich centre-back De Ligt, who is ‘awaiting an agreement between both teams’.

In addition to these assertions, Erik ten Hag has spoken with De Ligt on several occasions over the phone.

United see the player as a ‘increasingly viable contender’ to strengthen their backline. The 24-year-old centre-back, who joined Bayern from Juventus for £68 million in 2022, started 16 games for the Bundesliga club last season.

According to Bild’s Christian Falk, the German club is looking for roughly £59 million for the star this summer, but United is only willing to pay around £30 million.

Meanwhile, De Lift is a major Ten Hag fan. After taking over at Old Trafford in 2022, the former Ajax manager backed his previous manager’s success in Manchester.

“He is someone who loves his job and he loves to work,” according to De Ligt. “He’s really detail-oriented. This makes him an excellent trainer.

“He possesses many attributes necessary for success. He undoubtedly enhances players. He wants to do anything to help his team play better.”

Rasmus Hojlund, a Manchester United forward, was recently quizzed about the links surrounding De Ligt. “It has nothing to do with me.” I can’t answer that question, but he’s a good defender.

Manchester United have identified a summer transfer target to reinforce their defensive line, and Erik ten Hag has ‘welcomed’ the move, according to a fresh report.

The Reds are expected to make several acquisitions in the coming months as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his colleagues want to improve things on the pitch.

They have focused strengthening four positions: full-back, centre-back, central midfielder, and striker.

Ratcliffe recently blasted UEFA for preventing United from signing OGC Nice centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo, who impressed in Ligue 1 last season.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is apparently ‘eager’ to join the Manchester United squad, but there could be a major stumbling block in negotiations.

Now, another possibility has emerged. According to The Athletic, United are’seriously contemplating’ signing Netherlands international Matthijs de Ligt.

The 24-year-old centre-back, who joined Bayern Munich from Juventus for £68 million in 2022, made 16 starts for the Bundesliga champions last season.

United sees him as a ‘increasingly feasible possibility’ to improve their back line, although negotiations have yet to begin.

David Ornstein claims there is ‘no assurance’ that a move would occur, but he has been identified as a ‘clear’ target. Erik ten Hag, who previously managed the player at Ajax, is also open to a reunion.

When asked about his current predicament while on international duty with the Netherlands this summer, De Ligt replied, “I’m relatively relaxed. Moments like this can be challenging.”

He continued, “Talking about it helps you loosen up and give your energies on the field instead of

Ligt appears to have been added to United’s shortlist, but he will not come cheap.

The Dutch defender is a huge fan of Ten Hag. Back in 2022, after the former Ajax boss took over at Old Trafford, De Ligt backed his old manager to succeed in Manchester.

“He is someone who loves his job and he loves to work,” said De Ligt. “He’s really into the details. This makes him a really good trainer.

“He has a lot of qualities (to succeed). He definitely improves players. He wants to do everything to make his team play better.”
