According to The Athletic, Newcastle United is one of several Premier League clubs in talks with Bologna about a potential transfer for Italian defender Ricardo Calafiori.

The versatile 22-year-old shined in Italy’s Euro 2024 opener, a 2-1 victory against Albania on Saturday, and has had an excellent season in Serie A.

Calafiori was a key part of Bologna’s excellent league season, which saw them qualify for the Champions League in fourth place, attracting interest in a number of its best players.

Along with Newcastle, The Athletic report that Liverpool, Brighton, and West Ham have all approached the Italian club about a prospective transfer, however Juventus is thought to be leading the race now that Thiago Motta has left Bologna to coach the Turin-based team.

Calafiori’s versatility to play centre-back, full-back, and defensive midfield may appeal to Eddie Howe, a manager who enjoys bringing in flexible players, but Bologna will be anxious to keep their important man after clinching Champions League football.

His price tag is sure to rise further if he continues to perform at the Euros, but it’s another name to keep an eye on.
