Newcastle United receives ‘astonishing’ response over Anthony Gordon’s Liverpool deal.

Andy Cole has made his emotions clear over Anthony Gordon’s likely departure from Newcastle United this summer.

Andy Cole would be ‘astonished’ if Anthony Gordon left Newcastle United this summer, and has asked the 23-year-old to seriously evaluate his options if he is considering leaving.

At the end of June, in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), United and Liverpool discussed the transfer of the former Everton winger. As it turned out, money was raised through the sale of other assets, so no significant players will need to sell this summer.

However, the damage was done in the aftermath, when Gordon was far away from Tyneside, in Germany, with the England squad seeking to reach consecutive European Championship finals. Rumours claim he was seduced by the interest once there appeared to be a real likelihood of moving.

“I’d be very surprised if Newcastle United were even thinking about selling him,” former striker Cole told Betfred. “I know there’s a lot of debate about Financial Fair Play, but Newcastle must have known they were going to be in that position, and if they were, why would they want to trade one of their finest players? I would find that incredible.”

He said, “If Gordon does want to transfer to Liverpool, where will he play? Liverpool would have to relocate someone in order to accommodate him. From the outside, it appears to be a crazy one, assuming the supposition is true.

There have been no follow-up conversations with Liverpool, who also expect Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo to return from international duty before the new season begins. Reports of a Manchester City offer surfaced over the weekend, but were later denied.
