The Boston Red Sox have had an intriguing offseason so far. They were heavily involved in the race for superstar outfielder Juan Soto but ultimately decided not to commit to the $765 million deal it took to land him. Instead, the Red Sox shifted their focus to pitching and made significant moves, adding Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to their starting rotation. These additions strengthen their pitching depth but could push free-agent right-hander Nick Pivetta out of Boston’s plans.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball speculates that Pivetta might leave the Red Sox and sign a $40 million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. “With top free-agent starters Corbin Burnes, Sean Manaea, and Walker Buehler all off the board, the market for starting pitching is getting thin,” Finkelstein wrote. “Nick Pivetta now stands out as the top free-agent starter for teams looking to fill rotation needs. The Blue Jays, who’ve missed on several major targets, might be desperate enough to take a shot at him despite the draft capital involved.”
The Blue Jays have struggled to land big names this offseason, missing out on Juan Soto, Max Fried, and Corbin Burnes. While Pivetta isn’t in the same tier as those stars, he could still be a valuable addition to their rotation alongside other free-agent signings. Toronto’s need to bolster their pitching staff makes Pivetta a logical target, especially with limited options remaining.
If the Blue Jays follow through, it would mark a notable division rivalry twist, with Pivetta potentially moving from Boston to Toronto. For the Red Sox, the offseason remains an ongoing effort to retool and contend in a competitive AL East.
