Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s manager, has had his first glimpse at the players he will lead next season.

The Blues drew 2-2 with Wrexham earlier this week, with practically the entire squad given 45 minutes to showcase their abilities.

Several players played in positions they were unfamiliar with. Ben Chilwell played centre-back in the second half.

The method Maresca hopes to bring to Stamford Bridge was on display, and it hinged on the Blues building up with the ball from behind.

Maresca warns Chelsea supporters they will make mistakes.
The Italian appears to be eager to allay supporters’ concerns about the dangerous strategy, and according to journalist Kieran Gill, he accepted that mistakes will result in goals conceded.

He said: “Enzo Maresca told us after last night’s 2-2 draw with Wrexham that Chelsea will concede goals this season while playing out of the back. Pep Guardiola experienced this when he took over Manchester City in 2016 and has since progressed from there. Teething issues are to be expected.”

Those who start in defence will need to get used to having the ball at their feet, and the next friendlies will give Maresca an indication of who is best suited to this.

Wesley Fofana looks to make a return.
Levi Colwill’s passing ability is undeniable, and he will undoubtedly attempt to force his way into the starting lineup against Manchester City on the first day of the season.

The remaining spots are up for grabs, and Wesley Fofana will be hoping that his fitness does not prevent him from participating.

The Frenchman did not play a single minute last season due to a major knee injury, and there will be no rush to get him back to full fitness in the hopes that his difficulties will be resolved.
