As he and departing manager Jurgen Klopp decided to leave the club at the end of the season, Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has landed a new position.

Red Bull Salzburg has named Pep Lijnders, an assistant manager at Liverpool, as their next head coach.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Austria Bundesliga team confirmed the appointment of the Dutchman as their next first-team manager. He and Jurgen Klopp will both be leaving the Reds at the end of the current campaign. Victor Matos will support him on a three-year deal that expires in the summer of 2027.

Lijnders joined the Reds in 2014 as an academy coach for the Under 16s. A year later, he was elevated to the position of first-team development coach. That was his original role under Brendan Rodgers, and it was his job when Klopp was appointed in October 2015.

At the beginning of the 2018–19 season, Lijnders returned to Liverpool as assistant manager after managing NEC Nijmegen in his native country. Before the team won the Premier League for the first time in the next season, he was crucial to their Champions League victory.
