Following Erling Haaland’s double for Manchester City, which eliminated Tottenham Hotspur’s prospects of finishing in fourth place, Aston Villa has secured a spot in the Champions League for the upcoming season.

Tuesday night’s 2-0 victory against Villa in North London gave City the Premier League lead, but there was still cause for celebration in certain areas of Birmingham as Villa secured fourth place with one game remaining.

In the second half, Haaland gave Spurs the lead by tapping in a ball from Kevin De Bruyne. The South Korean was clear through on goal after capitalizing on a mistake from Manuel Akanji on 86 minutes, but only after replacement goalkeeper Stefan Ortega made a spectacular save to deny Son Heung-min one-on-one. He would go on to score a second from the penalty spot in the 91st minute. Even with a draw, Spurs would have been five points ahead of Villa, meaning that Unai Emery’s team would still have been too strong to catch them.

The team will get a sizable award from UEFA and the Premier League for finishing in fourth place. In the 2023–24 season, it was worth £13.37 million to make it to the Champions League group stage. Given the new format of the competition, that amount is probably going to rise in the 2024–25 season.
