The UEFA Champions League will be open to Aston Villa following Tottenham’s 2-0 loss to Manchester City on Tuesday.

After the top four rivals were unable to overcome champions-elect City, Unai Emery’s team will play in the competition for the first time in their existence. With a point against Liverpool on Monday night, Villa almost guaranteed their spot in the esteemed tournament.

Spurs would have needed to win all three of their remaining games to secure a spot in the playoffs after their thrilling 3-3 draw at Villa Park put them on 68 points. Luckily for Villa, everything worked out for them.

Since the club changed its name from the European Cup in 1991–1992, it has not advanced to UEFA’s top club tournament. Their final participation in the tournament occurred 41 years ago in 1982–1983, after they had won the trophy the year prior.

Emery celebrated the accomplishment with his team on Tuesday at the club’s end-of-season honors. At Villa Park, the team and coaching staff came together to commemorate a landmark season for the team.

The Man City match was shown live on a large screen, and internet footage of the players celebrating surfaced. Ashley Preece, a former BirminghamMail writer for Aston Villa, shared the incredible moments from the awards ceremony.  Now, Villa will go to Selhurst Park to play Crystal Palace in a festive match. Football from the Champions League is heading to Villa Park.
